Today, I’ve retired some of my main, long standing email addresses due to the amount of spam. They’re some of my favourites, but it’s getting beyond a joke and increasingly difficult to stay on top of so I’ve taken the drastic path – unlike me I know
I’ve also adopted Jeremy’s style of managing blog comments and therefore turned commenting back on. Basically, no comments will be automatically published, everything gets held for moderation. Once anyone who has anything to say has said it, I’ll publish them all in one go and then close the thread. This way, I get to read the feedback, you get to leave it (should you want to), and I can more effectively manage the crap that was coming through before I turned it all off in the first place. We’ll see how it goes…

’bout time too! I’ve lost count of the number of half written emails about your posts I’ve deleted because you switched off the commenting!
Welcome back to comments!!! yay!!!!
How goes it?
Hey Pete,
So happy you decided to turn comments on!
Now, where’s that Viagra link?
I’ve had a method I’ve used for a while that only works because I maintain my own mail server, but I won’t actually retire an address, I simply tell spamassassin that mail coming to that account automatically gets a pretty high spam score, thus making just about anything that looks remotely like spam sure to get marked as spam and thrown away. The good messages will keep the score level and still come through. Not for everyone, but giving up those nice emails might not be so easy either.
Cool for enabling comments. I don’t know how long I’ve had you in RSS (or how I even found your blog) but I think comments are a good thing for almost all writers and readers.
Thanks guys.
Comments are definitely good. I probably should have thought a little harder about it before just turning them off previously, but it was more than likely during a particularly busy time and I just went with the obvious choice.
I have a few more other developments planned for around here too.
Jason – nice idea about the mail server…
It seems that commenting is still on even though you’ve published some on this post. Ah well… I like comments, but I’ve recently made the switch from Movable Type to WordPress and I have nothing but praise for it (including its comment spam filter). I thought the switch would be painful as I was so used to using MT, but actually I’m very impressed, and I now see what all the fuss was about after all!
Ok, I might bend my ‘rules’ for friends
I’m actually installing WP on a mirror at the moment Paul. I’m thinking I might go that way for this site too. I’ve been running it locally on my mac for sometime, as a sort of knowledgebase of stuff that I want to be able to access quickly – it does indeed rock…
So happy comments are back. Now if I knew what e-mail address still worked for you we would be all set.
