Hot Pipes, originally uploaded by Pete Barr-Watson.

My cold/flu thing is still taking it out of me, but I took a drive out to Shoreham today to get some air. This is a local surf spot but the surfers were a little further west today because hot pipes was a little mushy I think.

This place is called hot-pipes because right under these warning poles is the cooling outlet for the power station on the other side of the road. The water that flows from here can look pretty disgusting and is often confused for a waste outlet, but it’s just water that’s been used to cool the power station. The end result is the area to the west of this picture (so, to the right) is quite a lot warmer than the surrounding area – add a small break about 75m out from the shore and it’s about as good as it gets for surfing in Brighton most of the time. It’s not Mavericks or anything, but can be good fun at times…
