I went over to the acclaimed East Beach Cafe for breakfast this morning (I’m enjoying the last of a long weekend off from work – yay!) after reading about this place so much in various newspapers etc.
It’s in a great spot. Loads of parking and pretty easy to get to too. Inside, it’s light, airy and very pleasant to just sit in and have a coffee. All in all a wonderful venue.
I was disappointed that they don’t serve a full breakfast menu during the week though (it doesn’t say that on the website) and had to end up with a bacon roll for £4. This would have been ok, but they committed the cardinal sin of using really cheap and quite nasty bacon. Bleh.
I will never understand British businesses that go all out to impress in certain areas and then balls it up by dropping the ball in others and the East Beach Cafe is pretty typical in this respect. 10 minutes later, the waitress was walking around with another bacon roll looking for the customer who ordered it. I was the only one there at the time… :/
Simply because of the venue and the previous things I’ve seen written about the place I will definitely go back and try them again for lunch at some point I suspect, but for breakfast during the week, don’t bother…

From the Guardian wellbeing section:
“I was reassured that it wasn’t my fault, that there was nothing I could have done; it was his choice. All of which I knew, but it was good to hear from someone else.
As a child of the enlightenment, a rationalist and an atheist, I was sure I wouldn’t be unduly affected by the death of a person unknown.”
Very moving article, wow.

The Black Leather Seats of the “Star Flyer” connecting Tokyo and Kita-Kyushu.
PingMag – The Tokyo-based magazine about “Design and Making Things” » Archive » The Return of Black!
Josh sent me a link to this article on PingMag about ‘black’ stuff making a design comeback in Japan.
I absolutely love both black and white objects. In Tokyo last week, I came across a bunch of shiny white products with black detailing that were just lustful. Think Star Wars Stormtrooper and you’ll get what I mean…

Anyway, great link, cheers Josh.

A contact of mine in the Brighton Flickr group that I started way back when is off to Romania soon for the charity E4CN to teach some photography workshops, using pinhole cameras!
She’s gonna blog here, so please do check it out and check her progress!

I’m honoured to have been asked to judge the second round for the Flash Film Festival 2008 this year. I finished the other night sat in near darkness at our place in Shinjuku, Tokyo where I’m out on a short break with Pip. The quality was mixed in my view, but the top 3/4′s of each category I was asked to judge were generally of a very high quality which made it a lot of fun to run through each of about 40 sites. Thank goodness for jetlag!
The Flash Film Festival is part of the overall Flash Forward Conference which is taking place later this year in San Francisco on August 20th – 22nd. I’ve spoken at a large proportion of the twice yearly event since it’s inception back in the day and have judged the film festival on a number of occassions. This year, I was proud to be in such company as Ben Fry, Aral Balkan, Lynda Weinman and many others – you can check out the full list here.

This small bamboo forest was on the way back near a shortcut back to their house. I’ve always wanted to go to the bamboo road in Kyoto (will look the name up later and edit here) but this will more than do for now
