I just found a great company based in Brighton called Stride UK. They specialize in gait analysis and sports injury (via Studio 57, owned by the same folks) and are also the only Newton running shoe dealer in the area too. I needed to get a new pair of Newtons and just happened to find them via a comment on someone’s blog. I gotta say, they were pretty good to deal with too – really friendly and very clearly knowledgeable too (I saw Elle). Sort of a nice change to most other UK businesses in this space…
Definitely thinking of booking in for a proper gait analysis session once my calf injury has healed a little more (torn muscle from running in heavily cushioned and motion-controlled Brooks shoes :s).
I’ve been thinking about getting a pair of the Vibrams Five Fingers, or Nike Free (though not sure if 7, 5 or 3 would be best). Any reason you use Newtons?
the five fingers are rated by some folks pretty highly Dave. I’ve also tried the Nike Free’s and found them a little too tight fitting for me. I went to Newton’s in the first place because of the ‘small company based in Boulder’ thing – Boulder being a sort of running mecca ‘n all… The first time I ran in them I was convinced – but you’d have to give them a try I guess…
Pete, how very nice of you to comment on our company. Elles my wife and we launched StrideUK only 12 months ago. We’ve had a really great response from all areas, but nothing beats a good ol customer satisfaction comment.
I hope the Newtons are working well with you, I run in the Gravities. Why run in any thing else I say!!

The Newtons are great because they offer the cushioning in the right place uder the forefoot for forefoot running. The reason why I am preferable to this is simply because most of the running I do is on rock hard / man made surfaces, never the best for anyone regardless of running style or fitness. The Newton ‘activator lugs’ provide the cushioning to support this, let alone offering a little more proprioception to my runs and aids forward momentum and energy return. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t sold out to Newton Technology, they certainly wouldn’t be suitable for most heel strikers nor inflexible runners. Core strength is essential too.
